Writing Center

Dodie Smith, Writing Consultant

Dodie Smith

After completing the first two years of my college education, I took a 20-year "leave of absence" from school and focused on being a wife and mother. I returned to college in the fall of 1997 and, in June 2001, I achieved a personal goal by becoming the first member of my family to graduate from college. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from UW Bothell in the Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences program concentrating in American Studies.

The IAS program helped me to strengthen my communication skills, both oral and written, and enabled me to gain confidence in expressing my thoughts and ideas on paper. I came to understand that the written word can be a powerful tool of communication, especially when expressed with clarity and succinctness. The process of developing my writing ability was difficult and sometimes frustrating, but through perseverance I often achieved a wonderful sense of self-satisfaction on a "job well done."

Working in the writing center allows me to share skills that will enable writers to explore and strengthen their writing ability, and through the process, become authors of clear and concise prose.
