Major: Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences
Emphasis in Culture, Literature and the Arts
The most difficult aspect of writing is myself, the writer. I love to punish myself and make small writing tasks as difficult as possible. Greeting cards, for the average person, take less than one minute to write. For me, the task requires 20 minutes to complete. For example, I want to wish my grandpa a happy 93rd birthday, but how might I adequately express said happiness? Now, imagine translating this same contemplation into a 10-page literary analysis or research proposal. In case you’d rather not imagine, I will state that it is not a fun way to spend a Saturday night.
While I have struggled with pushing through the blocks I impose on myself, I have found a writing process that works for me. Organizing the general aspects of my paper in an outline, then filling in the details has been a successful strategy. I have learned other approaches to writing that have been useful to me and I would be delighted to share these practices that save me from late night panic and tears.
As a Writing Consultant, I hope to help my peers discover a process that works for them. I am currently an Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences major in the Culture, Literature and the Arts option. I plan to continue working with students by applying for the Master of Library and Information Science program at the University of Washington Seattle.
For those of you who have shared my frustrating experience with the writing process, know that you do not need to struggle alone. It is possible to be a successful student and enjoy your Saturday evenings. We are in it together, and I am here to help, especially with your grandfather’s birthday card.
