Check this page often for news about upcoming merit scholarships. Deadlines are usually posted at least a month in advance to give you plenty of time to prepare your application.

Ronald E. McNair Program

  • Assists underrepresented students in preparing for doctoral study through involvement in research and scholarly activities.
  • Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents, low-income, first-generation, African American, Latino/Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander, or Native American, UW students with at least one year of undergraduate study remaining, with a strong interest in pursuing a PhD.
  • Application Deadline: May 30, 2012.

Woodrow Wilson-Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowships for Aspiring Teachers of Color

  • Designed to recruit, support, and retain individuals of color as public school teachers in the United States.
  • Fellows receive $30,000 plus mentoring and training to complete master’s degree programs in education and become excellent educators who ensure student success in high-need schools.
  • Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents of color, committed to the goals of the program and graduating by June 2013 with a 3.0 or higher GPA.
  • UW Application Deadline: May 31, 2012. National Deadline: October 14, 2012.

Scholarships and Fellowships with Early Fall Deadlines

Several of the most prestigious merit scholarships and fellowships have early fall deadlines. In order to prepare a competitive application, it's essential to plan well in advance and allow several months to compile the application components.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program

  • Post-graduate opportunity, funded by the US Department of State, to spend a year abroad doing research, graduate studies, or teach English in over 155 countries worldwide.
  • Applicants must be US citizens in good health who will have completed a Bachelor's degree by the start of the grant. They must have a high level of academic or professional achievement, demonstrated leadership ability, and a well-designed project proposal. Foreign language proficiency may be required.
  • To get started, attend one of the Fulbright events this spring and schedule an advising appointment to discuss your specific interests.
  • UW Application Deadline: September 12, 2012. National Deadline: October 17, 2012.

Luce Scholars Program

  • Provides fully-funded year-long placements in Asia, including stipends, language training, and tailored work assignment, for young leaders who have had limited experience of Asia.
  • Applicants must be US citizens under 30, in good health, who will have completed a Bachelor's degree by the start of the grant.
  • UW Application Deadline: September 10, 2012. National Deadline: November 1, 2012.

Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program

  • Two-year, post-graduate leadership development program, sponsored by the federal Office of Personnel Management, for top students interested in government service. Program combines paid work assignments with classroom training and development opportunities.
  • Applicants must be US citizens or in the process of obtaining US citizenship who will complete their advanced degree program by the end of August 2013.
  • Deadline: mid-September 2012.
