School of STEM Approved
The UW Board of Regents approved the consolidation of the Computing and Software Systems Program (CSS) and the Science and Technology Program (S & T) into a new School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) at its meeting in February. The new school will build on existing strengths and facilitate increased collaboration among faculty, staff, and students in curricula, research, and community partnerships. The School of STEM is the third School to be established as part of UW Bothell’s ongoing transition to schools as its primary academic units. Elaine Scott, Ph.D., has been named dean of the new school.
Jaffe Wins Fulbright Award
Dan Jaffe, Ph.D., Professor of Atmospheric and Environmental Chemistry in the School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at the University of Washington Bothell, has received a 2013-14 Fulbright Award.
Jaffe will spend a quarter as the distinguished chair in environmental sciences at the Parthenope, University of Naples, Italy. He is expected to travel to Naples in spring, 2014.
"This is a very exciting opportunity to go somewhere new and interact with people who are interested in sustainability," Jaffe says. "I am looking forward to interacting with students from another culture."
Jaffe will conduct research with colleagues based in Rome, and will also teach classes at the University of Naples. Details
UW Bothell at the Forefront of Cyber Security Training
UW Bothell students will participate remotely in the Big Splash Cyber Defense Exercise, a four-day event in Oahu, Hawaii that aims to empower cyber security responders with skills and techniques to properly plan, manage, and respond to cyber security incidents related to critical infrastructure. Earlier this month, UW Bothell collaborated with Los Alamos National Laboratory to serve as a regional hub for Tracer FIRE 5, a week-long hands-on computer security workshop for cyber defenders in DOE, other government agencies, critical infrastructure, and college students.
