Required UW Bothell Education Field Experience Courses

The Secondary and Middle Level Teacher Certification M.Ed. integrates courses and structured field experiences. Teacher candidates have many opportunities to apply and extend what they've learned in university classes to their work in all school settings.

B EDUC 591 - Beginning the School Year (September Experience)

The teacher candidate will begin the school year with the teachers first contracted day or as advised by the cooperating teacher. A required Orientation will be held at the UW Bothell at the beginning of the experience.

Dates: August 23 (or as requested by placement school) through September 23

  • August 23, 10:00 a.m. – noon, Orientation
  • August 23, 12:30 – 4:30 p.m., Co-Teaching Workshop
  • September 13-17, Seminar/meetings TBA with Clinical faculty in schools
  • September 23, 1:00 p.m., Seminar at UW Bothell
  • September 24-28, Break
  • September 29, Classes begin at UW Bothell

Purposes of the Beginning the School Year Experience are to:

  • Observe the cooperating teacher introducing content, communicating expectations, and establishing inclusive learning communities
  • Help and assist in setting up the classroom and opening school
  • Share and reflect on the experiences with other UW Bothell students and faculty
  • Develop professional relationships with school personnel and students
  • Become immersed in the school through professional meetings, informal encounters, and school activities
  • Receive written feedback and to self assess using the Teacher Candidate Disposition form
  • Learn the expectations, knowledge, and skills for academic support/tutoring for one period each day

A detailed syllabus of expectations, journal assignments, blogging, and observation guidelines will be given at the Orientation session.

B EDUC 564 Field Experience

Purposes of the Autumn quarter Field Experience are to:

  • Work in a Co-Teaching model with a Cooperating Teacher
  • Begin a very gradual assumption of responsibility for student learning
  • Connect coursework and fieldwork through integrated Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment assignments
  • Develop habits of observation, collection of data, reflection and revision
  • Become comfortable with formal observations and conference protocols

Dates: October 4 through December 17

  • October 4-15, Alternate Site Experience, full days every day
    The Teacher candidate will continue the expectations of the Beginning the School experience at an alternate level for comparison and contrast. Suggested observations and focused questions will be provided at a seminar.

  • October 18-December 18, Primary Site, full days every day
  • October 21, 3:50 pm. - Professional Practice Seminars
  • November 4, 3:50 pm. - Professional Practice Seminars
  • November 18, 3:50 pm. - Professional Practice Seminars
  • December 2, 3:50 pm. - Professional Practice Seminars
  • December 16, 3:50 pm. - Professional Practice Seminars

A course syllabus will outline details of the field expectations including the following:

  • Teacher candidates resume tutoring academic support responsibilities for one period every day
  • Teachers and teacher candidates incorporate the Co-Teaching Model to scaffold and share responsibilities for student learning in 4 classes
  • Teacher candidates co-teach some periodic lessons or parts of lessons
  • Teacher candidates assume leadership for at least 1 unit for 2 weeks to 2 classes, OR 1 class for 4 weeks, 3 of the same class for no more than 2 weeks, for a total of 20-25 lessons. The UW Bothell student will not plan alone or teach fulltime during the Autumn quarter
  • Teacher candidates must complete 3 successful observations by their clinical faculty to earn course credit and be recommended to proceed to full-time student teaching.

B EDUC 565 (Winter Quarter) Student Teaching
B EDUC 591 Professional Practice Seminar

Students will be in their schools full time every day for eleven weeks excluding the school's Winter Break (if applicable) and holidays.

Professional Practice Seminars at UW Bothell will be held every other Tuesdays, 3:30 – 5:30 pm beginning January 4, 2011 (* subject to change depending on room availability)

Purposes of Winter quarer B EDUC 565 "Student Teaching" and B EDUC 591 "Professional Practice Seminar" are to:

  • Continue and further develop the learning goals from the Autumn Quarter
  • Build knowledge, skills, dispositions, and confidence to be recommended for certification to the State of Washington and Credit for B EDUC 565.

A course syllabus will outline further details of the Student Teaching and Professional Practice Seminar expectations including the following:

  • Cooperating teacher and teacher candidate resume co-teaching model of student teaching
  • Teacher candidate gradually assumes primary responsibility, within co-teaching model, for 4 classes for 6 weeks
  • Teacher candidate continues tutoring/academic support responsibilities every day for entire quarter
  • During University finals week, teacher candidates may have some culminating university coursework responsibilities, and they should allocate some time to observe other teachers
  • Teacher candidates will demonstrate evidence of positive impact on student learning through analysis of student work
  • Teacher candidates will complete a minimum of 4 successful observations and conferences by their clinical faculty
  • Teacher candidates will successfully complete a Professional Portfolio that will be enhanced and refined during Spring quarter.
  • Teacher candidates will complete all necessary certification paperwork and requirements
