REQUIRED PROGRAM ELECTIVES
Non-Nursing Electives
15 credits of non-Nursing electives are required of all Nursing students; all 15 credits must be taken from UW Bothell.
Electives may be selected from 300-400 level courses that are offered by UW Bothell programs (Health, Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences, Business, Computer Science & Software, or Education) and are open to all majors. [NOTE: Exceptions include BISSKL, BCUSP and any courses taken to satisfy Nursing prerequisites such as QSR or Statistics. However, elective credits may be counted toward shortfalls in general education requirements, such as in VLPA/Humanities or IS/Social Science.]
Students with general education requirement shortfalls should consult with their BSN Advisor before selecting electives to assure any shortfall will be satisfied.
Typically one or two Health courses (BHLTH) are offered each quarter. These are sponsored and normally taught by the Nursing Program; however, since they are open to all majors, most of these courses may be used to satisfy the non-Nursing electives. BHLTH 397/497 are special topics courses on health-related issues; the topics of BHLTH 397/497 courses are different every quarter. [NOTE: Save the syllabi of any special topics courses you take, for future proof of course title/content.]
OPTIONAL NURSING ELECTIVES
In addition to the Nursing courses required by the curriculum, several other courses are available as elective credits. These courses are meant to offer the student an opportunity to pursue a particular interest in more depth. Credit shortfalls may be made up by completing one or more of these courses; however, they will not substitute for the required non-Nursing electives.
The Nursing elective courses are:
- BNURS 497, Selected Topics in Nursing
- BNURS 498, Special Project in Nursing
- BNURS 499, Undergraduate Research.
BNURS 497 may be offered during any quarter, not necessarily on a regular basis, and the subject matter will change with the instructor.
BNURS 498 and 499 are available every quarter except summer, for variable credit from 1-12 credit hours. To enroll in one of these courses, a student must design a project or research topic in collaboration with a permanent nursing faculty member; the number of credits will be negotiated between student and instructor. Course guidelines and sample contracts are available.
