University of Washington Bothell Undergraduate Research Awards
The University of Washington Bothell is pleased to announce the 2012-2013 Undergraduate Research Awards. These awards are made possible due to the generous support of the UW Bothell Founders Endowed Fellowship. The purpose of these awards is to encourage and recognize the participation of undergraduate students in research endeavors. These awards will allow students to focus more attention and time to research. Students from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. Funding is available for fall, winter and spring quarters for up to $500 per quarter. Award recipients who are enrolled in the spring are expected to present at the UW Bothell Undergraduate Research Symposium in May 2013. Please check with your financial aid advisor to see if this award will affect your financial aid package.
Application Deadline
Please turn in a hard copy of the application by Monday, October 22nd at 4:00pm to the Office of Research, UWBB 249 (Beardslee building).
Eligibility
Matriculated UW Bothell undergraduate students from any program and discipline are eligible to apply. Students must be pursuing a research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Students who applied for a Mary Gates Research Scholarship can also apply for a UWB Undergraduate Research Award; however, students cannot receive both at the same time.
Application Requirements
Complete applications must include the following documents in this order:
1) Application cover sheet (form provided, signed by you and your mentor, if you have one)
2) Award certificate of understanding (form provided)
3) Project Description (no more than 2 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font)
The project should describe in terms that are comprehensible to a non-specialist in the field. Use the following prompt: In your own words, describe your research project (goals) and what you and your faculty mentor hope to learn from your work (outcomes). Discuss your motivation for getting involved or starting the research project and how this work contributes to your education and to the development of your future plans.
4) Student background (no more than one page, double-spaced, 12-point font)
Describe your previous training and experience (course work, creative activity, laboratory experience, volunteer and community service experience, work and life experiences) that have prepared you to successfully complete this project. Have you worked with your mentor before and established a proven track record? How long have you worked together?
5) Methods, timeline and dissemination (written by you - no more than one page, double-spaced, 12-point font)
Although your plan of action will evolve, briefly outline the methods or process that will be employed in achieving the goals of this project, as well as a tentative schedule for its completion. Discuss how and when the results of your project will be shared.
Guidelines
1) Carefully follow all instructions and ensure that your application is complete. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
2) Describe your research project so that it can be understood by a person unfamiliar with the discipline and your specific research. Please note that the review board consists of faculty and staff from a wide range of disciplines, and it is essential that your application be easily understood by all of the reviewers.
3) Write your project description in your own voice. It is important that reviewers get a sense of your enthusiasm and understanding of the project.
4) Describe how your faculty member guides and supports your growth and learning. If you have yet to establish a working relationship with this mentor, describe how you plan to collaborate with and learn from this person.
