Program Curriculum for Professional Certification

 

The Teacher Professional Certification Program consists of a minimum of 12 required credits.

Pro Cert Seminars:

and electives in the M.Ed. Program (6 credits).

The 6 credits of M.Ed. electives are taken in conjunction with the Pro Cert Seminars. Pro Cert candidates in the M.Ed. at UW Bothell can apply the 6 Pro Cert Seminar credits and the 6 electives to their masters' degree.  For non-matriculated Pro Cert candidates, the six credits of electives can be petitioned to transferred from another graduate program if a student already has a M.Ed. or is in another M.Ed. program.

The Pre-Assessment Seminar must be taken before the Professional Growth Seminars. The Professional Growth & Contribution/Culminating must be taken in the last quarter of a candidate's Pro Cert program. An optional Professional Growth Seminar is available for students who need additional mentoring is available but does not count for credit in the M.Ed. or Pro Cert Program.

 M.Ed. courses available for Professional Certification Students:

  • BEDUC 542 Pre-assessment Seminar (2 credits) Thorough examination of requirements for the Washington State Professional Certificate. Teaches how to collect evidence for the Pro Cert portfolio and to assess and plan for their professional development needs. This course is a prerequisite for the BEDUC 546 Pro Growth Seminars. Credit/no credit only. (Limit 20 students)
  • BEDUC 546 Professional Growth Seminar (1-2 credits): Curriculum & Instruction: Focus: Criteria 1a, 1d, and 1f. This course will draw from a literature/research base to teach about best practice in the criteria areas, to consider best evidence, and to provide feedback for candidates writing the portfolio entry. Credit/no credit only. (Limit 12 students)
  • BEDUC 546 Professional Growth Seminar (1-2 credits): Assessment: Focus on Criteria 1b and 2a. This course will draw from a literature/research base to teach about best practice in the criteria areas, to consider best evidence, and to provide feedback for candidates writing the portfolio entry. Credit/no credit only. (Limit 12 students)
  • BEDUC 546 Professional Growth Seminar: Building a Learning Community (1-2 Credits). Focus on Criteria 1c, 1e, and 1g. This course will draw from a literature/research base to teach about best practice in the criteria areas, to consider best evidence, and to provide feedback for candidates writing the portfolio entry. Credit/no credit. (Limit 12 students)
  • BEDUC 546 Professional Growth Seminar: Professional Growth and Contribution/Culminating (1-2 credits). Focus on Criteria: 2b, 2c, 3a, 3b. This course will draw from a literature/research base to teach about best practice in the criteria areas, to consider best evidence, and to provide feedback for candidates writing the portfolio entry. This should be taken in the last quarter of a candidate's Professional Certification program. This seminar also includes reflection on professional development and mentoring of new candidates. Credit/no credit. (Limit 12 students)
  • BEDUC 546 Professional Growth Seminar: Portfolio Writing (1-2 credits, Optional): This study provides individual mentoring for Professional Certification candidates' writing of portfolio entries. Intended for candidates who have completed the required Pro Growth seminars. Credit/no credit. (Limit 8 students.)
  • M.Ed. Electives (6 credits) Candidates enroll in M.Ed. courses while taking Pro Cert seminars. These courses are chosen to align with candidates' Professional Growth Plans and documentation of Pro Cert Standards and Criteria, for example, in the area of curriculum development, assessment, technology, cultural diversity, and/or teacher leadership. A candidate who has previously completed or is concurrently taking graduate courses at another university may petition to transfer elective credits to the UW Bothell Pro Cert Program. A total of six credits are required, typically taken as two 3-credit electives.
