Reading Endorsement Areas of Competency

 

Washington State's Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI),  the primary agency charged with overseeing K-12 education, requires specific academic courses for each of the following six paths toward the reading endorsement:

1.0 OSPI Common Core: Foundational Knowledge

Candidates have knowledge of the foundations of reading and writing processes and instruction.

2.0 OSPI Common Core: Assessment, Diagnosis and Evaluation

Candidates demonstrate knowledge of the assessment/evaluation/instruction cycle and how to use a variety of assessment tools and practices to plan and evaluate effective reading instruction.

Candidates have knowledge of a wide range of instructional practices, approaches, methods and curriculum materials to support reading and writing instruction.

Candidates create a literate environment that fosters reading and writing by integrating foundational knowledge, use of instructional practices, approaches and methods, curriculum materials and the appropriate use of assessments.

6.0 OSPI Common Core: Instructional Methodology (Demonstration)

Candidates demonstrate a deep understanding of the pedagogical knowledge and practice specific to the teaching of reading and writing.

Adding a WA State Reading Endorsement

  1. Completion of an approved Reading Endorsement course of study (24 course credits).
  2. Successfully pass the WEST-E Reading test
