Restoration Ecology Network

North Creek 2006

The University of Washington Restoration Ecology Network (UW-REN) offers a 9-month Senior Capstone for UW Bothell students. In this capstone, students of different academic backgrounds from across the tri-campus UW system work together to complete a local restoration project. Teams of students learn how to plan, design, install, and monitor a restoration project while working with a real client in the surrounding community.

Community clients, including local governments, utilities, non-profits, and private firms, submit RFPs (requests for proposals) to UW-REN concerning restoration problems or opportunities. Our faculty guide student teams in working with the client to create acceptable proposals and work plans that are innovative, practical, and based upon academic knowledge. Recent community partners include Tacoma Community College, the City of Shoreline, and the recently-established Snoqualmie Tribe. Full list of UW-REN clients>>

This capstone was recognized by Science Magazine in 2006 as an excellent example of hands-on, interdisciplinary education in Science. Kern Ewing and Warren Gold, principle faculty members of UW-REN, were awarded the John Rieger Award in 2004 from the Society for Ecological Restoration International for their impact on the theory, practice, or public awareness of restoration.
