Canvas App

The Canvas App for Android and iOS lets students and instructors easily view course activity and participate in class discussions, view grades, and submit assignments. You can download Canvas from the Apple AppStore or Google Play.

Getting Started

When you first open the Canvas app, it will prompt you to enter in some information so that the app can connect to Canvas at UW. For the URL, type in canvas.uw.edu and tap Connect.

The next page will ask you to sign in with your UW NetID as well as confirm that you owish to login to Canvas using this account.

Once you have logged in to Canvas, you will see the home page of the app. This view contains all of the courses you are currently taking as well as an activity stream and to do list. To access a course, simply tap on the notebook icon labled with the course you wish to view.

The activity stream shows the latest events on all of your courses such as new assignments, discussion posts, etc. You can quickly navigate to an event by tapping here.

At the bottom of the screen is the taskbar. The icons on the right allow you to access course grades and new messages. The icon on the lower left is your profile on Canvas.

Below is the typical view of a course. The navigation bar at the top lets you access different areas of the course. Note that some tabs will not appear if the instructor is not using the feature in the class.

  • Schedule - This page contains a list of past, current, and upcoming assignments and events. You can view assignments and complete quizzes here.
  • Discussions - This page is the discussion board for the course. You can view and respond to posts on the discussion board here.
  • People - This page contains a list of everyone currently in the course.
  • Files - This page will show all files that are uplaoded to the course under your account.
  • Pages - This lets you view course pages/wikis. You cannot edit them on Canvas.
