Canvas for Instructors

Assignments

The Assignments section in Canvas lets instructors create homework, quizzes, and links where students submit work for instructors to access. Assignments are useful for evaluating student proficiency in the course material and can be in the form of short questionnaires, homework submissions, and quizzes.

To create an assignment, follow these steps:

Go into the Assignments section and click on the + Add Assignment button.

In the box that appears, enter a name for the assignment as well as the due date and the number of points the assignment is worth.

If there is no due date for the assignment or if it is ungraded, leave the fields blank.

Click on the More Options link to specify assignment details and directions.

In the description box, you can give directions for the assignment as well as provide additional information. Clicking the Switch Views link will allow you to preview the assignment as a student.

Underneath the assignment description, you can again set the due date and the number of points for the assignment. Leave these fields blank if the assignment is ungraded or there is no due date.

The Submission field will let you specify whether students can submit the assignment online, in class, or that there are no submissions needed.

Check the Notify Users check-box to automatically send an e-mail to registered students about assignment changes.

Click on Update Assignment to save the assignment.
