Importing Video

Importing Video from Various Devices

Importing from Flip via iMovie:
1) Plug your Flip camera into the computer via USB. Make sure your computer recognizes it.

2) Open iMovie. Click on “File” near the top of the screen, a menu will come down, then click on “Import from Camera”.

3) An import box will come up. You will see all your video clips near the bottom. Click on “Import All” and it will begin the import process.

If you decide you don’t want to use all the clips, click to the left of the word “Manual”. Un-check the box below any clip you don’t want to use. When you’re done with those steps, click “Import Checked” to begin importing.

If you import selections you will have to click “Done” when the import is finished.

4) In the "Optimize Video" box make sure your video is “Full-Original Size”.
Also, click in the box located next to it to select it. Then click on the “Import” button.

Now you will see a bar with your videos. This shows you the length of time left in the importing process. When a clip finishes it will say imported.

When the video is finished being imported a box will pop up saying import complete. Click “OK”.

Your clips will now be on your timeline.

Importing Video from a FS100/200:
1) First turn the camera on. Make sure the power supply is connected and the USB cord is pluged into your camera and to the computer. Hit the playback button on the camera (looks like a little camera next to an arrow). Click "All (For PC Only) on the camera's lcd. Your camera should now be located on the desktop.

2) Since the FS100 creates file types not recognized by Final Cut Pro you will have to export your video files as .MOV's. 

Open MPEG Streamclip.

3) Double click on our CANON folder. Then click on “SD_Video”, “PRG002”, and then the video file you wish to export. Your video file will have a .MOD extension at the end.

4) Next click and hold on that file. Then drag it into the Mpeg Streamclip window.

5) Next click on “File”. A menu will come down. Then click on “Export To QuickTime”.

6) An export box will pop up. First click in the box the right of “Compression”. Select the compression type “Apple Intermediate Codec”. Then to the right of quality click and hold on the up triangle and drag the quality to 100 percent. Then below “Frame Size” select 720x480 (unscaled).
When you have completed these steps click on “Make Movie”.

Choose "Apple Intermediate Codec" from the drop down list.

7) Name your movie. Choose a location to save your file and click the save button in the lower right corner.

Allow the export process to finish. Depending on the size of your video this could take a few minutes to many hours.

8) You can also export multiple files at once: in Mpeg Streamclip click on “List”.
A menu will come down, then click on “Batch List”.

9) You will now see a box like the one below.

10) Now return to your video files on the camera hold “Command” and click on all the files you wish to use. Then click hold and drag these files into the Mpeg Steamclip box above.

10) Now return to your video files on the camera hold “Command” and click on all the files you wish to use. Then click hold and drag these files into the Mpeg Steamclip box above.

12) Then set your destination folder like before.

13) The export box will come up again. All the steps will be the same except this time you will click “To Batch”.

14) It will take you back to your list. Then click “Go”. Your exports will begin.

Now that you have exported your files as Quicktime movies they will be recognizable by iMovie. Now see the tutorial on “Adding Video” to IMovie.

 

Importing from Canon Vixia:
1) First turn the camera on. Plug in the power supply and the USB cord into your camera to the computer. Then hit the playback button. Then Select “All (for PC only)”. Now your camera should be on the desktop.

Using Image Capture:
1) For this tutorial I used a Panasonic Lumix camera. First, turn the camera on.
Then, plug the USB from the camera into the computer. A screen will come up called “USB Mode”; Make sure “PC” is selected.
If not, use the circular pad to scroll up or down. Once you have “PC” selected hit the “Menu Set” button. You should now see the camera on your desktop.

2) Now in the top right corner hit the spy glass. To the right of “Spotlight” start typing in image capture. Once it shows up click on it.

3) Now on the left under “devices” find your camera and click on it. This will bring up all your images. To the right of “Import To” if you click on that box you can select locations to import your images to. When you’re done with all these steps click on “Import All”.

You will see import process at the bottom left of the box.

4) You can also just import a single file by click on it then clicking on the “Import” button.

5) Also you can highlight multiple pictures and import them.

6) Once you pictures have finished importing you can bring them into iMovie. See tutorial on “Adding Still Images”.
