5K Run Supports Students

On May 14, UW Bothell will be hosting its 6th annual 5k Run-Walk. The event begins at 8:00 a.m. on the UW Bothell campus, followed by a breakfast and alumni social in the North Creek Events Center. Top female and male runners in the categories of open, masters, youth, UW Bothell student, and walker will receive awards. Additionally, those who are unable to make it to the day of the race can participate in the Doze for Dogs program. Doze for Dogs allows you to register for the race, get a shirt, and support student scholarships – all without competing.
The UW Bothell 5k Run-Walk brings together UW Bothell students, alumni, family, friends and the community. Most importantly, the run is an opportunity to contribute toward the education of UW Bothell students. In fact, since its inception, the UW Bothell 5K Run-Walk has generated over $40,000 for student scholarships, and recently endowed a special scholarship fund. Last year’s event drew more than 300 participants representing all ages.
Who does the Run support?
Proceeds from the run go directly to the UW Bothell Alumni Scholarship Fund, which was established in 2010 by the Alumni Council. It directly funds the UW Bothell Alumni Scholarship, which has served as a lifeline for many students by providing financial assistance to undergraduate, graduate and certificateseeking students. The Alumni Council directs scholarship fund support to students who clearly demonstrate qualities of character and leadership while exhibiting a strong commitment to community service and academic achievement.
Andrew Zilig, a master’s student, speaks on how the scholarship has aided him as a working teacher. “I was very excited and honored when I heard I was to receive this scholarship. Being awarded the UW Bothell Alumni Scholarship has allowed me to continue on with my studies towards my Master of Education. As a working teacher who is attending graduate school, I need all the financial assistance I can get. I am very grateful to have been awarded this scholarship.”
Sindi Diko attributes the scholarship for allowing her to concentrate on studying and volunteering. “Receiving the UW Bothell Alumni Scholarship meant a lot! It allowed me to dedicate more time to studies and volunteering in our community instead of working to pay for tuition. Also, it demonstrated that our Alumni Association is active and cares about current UW Bothell students especially in difficult financial times.”
The UW Bothell Annual 5k Run-Walk continues to serve the students of UW Bothell. It is made possible by the support and leadership from the UW Bothell Alumni Council, the UW Bothell Office of Advancement and External Relations, and the neighboring community businesses and friends of Bothell.

An Interdisciplinary Approach to Film Production

Jesse Stipek has made long strides in his passion for film production with his company Trico Films, which he and his brothers, Dylan and Miles, started at the age of 12. Jesse and his brothers are identical triplets, and came up with the name as a play on that fact. Jesse graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences program in 2010, and has concentrated on creating films professionally and independently since. His brothers also attend UW Bothell and will graduate in June 2011. Most recently, Jesse and his brothers finished a 14- minute film titled The Allegory of Aron Godfrey, the story of an ailing boy who is confronted with multiple hardships on his journey to find a cure for his disease. The film premiered in February 2011, at the Galaxy 12 Theatre in Monroe, Wash. Since its premier, the film has been sent to the National Film Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY) and Palm Springs Shortfest, and is expected to be sent to other festivals in the near future.
Jesse attributes UW Bothell in helping him think outside of the box. He states, “while attending UW Bothell, I was introduced to many foreign films which had me think about other modes of filmmaking besides Hollywood. I learned about transnational and crosscultural cinema and had the opportunity to demonstrate my work in class for final projects.” He considered Professor Samuel Yum his mentor in film studies during his education. Jesse currently works at Microsoft Studios where he uses his film abilities in the editorial department making videos for Xbox 360, MSNBC, and other products. He plans to remain at Microsoft until he is able to build Trico Films into a sustainable company for widespread silver screen distribution. The Allegory of Aron Godfrey will be the closing night movie on May 1, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. at the SIFF Cinema in Seattle, and will be released online at a future date.
