Teaching
In my teaching, I emphasize the generation of new writing through regular assignments and in-class writing experiments that are designed to spark original thought and fresh approaches to creative work. My courses also entail intensive reading of diverse and excellent writings, as I believe that voracious reading is key to every writer's development of his or her own literary aesthetic. Additionally, many of the writing experiments that I devise spring from the techniques and approaches deployed by the writers discussed.
Since my experience is in poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and multimedia work, my courses also focus on writings that integrate different genres and media, which is happily in line with IAS's innovative, interdisciplinary approach. I have a strong interest in the collaborative, experimental approaches used by the Surrealists and other more recent art revolutionaries.
In addition to teaching at UW, Bothell, I have recently taught creative writing at the UCLA Extension Writers' Program and at DigiPen Institute of Technology in Redmond, Washington.

My nonfiction writings about visual art and literature have been published in American Book Review, Poets & Writers, poetryfoundation.org, Seattle Magazine, The Stranger, The International Examiner, and other publications. My awards include grants from the Artist Trust and the A Room of Her Own Foundation and a residency at Yaddo.
