H1N1 Flu Information

October 2009

As you have heard in the news, numerous cases of H1N1 (Swine Flu) Influenza have been reported nationwide, and in Washington State. Spring Quarter 2009, several cases of H1N1 were reported at UW Bothell. University of Washington officials are continuing to monitor the evolution of the H1N1 (swine flu) virus in an effort to reduce transmission to students, faculty, and staff. We are committed to the health and welfare of our campus community.

If you are sick or are exhibiting flu-like symptoms, please

Stay home and limit interactions with other people, except to seek medical care, for at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever, or signs of a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medicines.

  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. If no tissue is available, cough or sneeze into your sleeve. Clean your hands, and do so every time you cough or sneeze.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Restore your immune system: eat healthy food, drink plenty of water, rest, refrain from smoking, and avoid alcoholic beverages.
  • Return to class and/or work ONLY after you are fully recovered.

What you can do to stay healthy

  • Wash hands regularly with soap and water or use a hand sanitizer frequently.
  • Eat healthy food, drink plenty of water, exercise, get plenty of rest, do not smoke and avoid alcoholic beverages.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

We remain focused on the health and welfare of our entire university community and appreciate the extra care individuals are taking at this time. We will continue to keep you informed as the situation evolves and more information is available.
