Academic Interests:
Dr. Smith's research interests include issues of teacher learning and knowledge, classroom use and interpretation of literacy assessments. He investigates the work of middle school literacy coaches over time in relation to changes in teacher knowledge and literacy-related classroom practice. He also examines the characteristics of adaptive teaching as they relate to teacher certification courses in literacy. His current research focuses on student retelling of nonfiction texts as a measure of reading comprehension.

Dr. Smith continued to serve as the Northwest Region Coordinator for the League of Democratic Schools (LODS). He assisted in planning and facilitating the national meeting of the LODS in Seattle in January 2008, and planned and facilitated a Northwest Region meeting in Olympia in May 2008.
