BCULST 502 Cultural Studies Research Practices
Elective |
- Students work on (and eventually submit) first Portfolio Framing Essay.
- Students schedule a meeting with PA to review draft of framing essay and to discuss plans for Year 2.
- Students submit Capstone pre-proposals and advisor choices to the Grad Office.
- Faculty make Capstone Advisor (CA) assignments.
- Students schedule a meeting with their new CA to discuss plans and any Human Subjects Review requirements.
- The add code for BCULST 510 (the Autumn Quarter required course) is sent to students once project approvals and advisor matches have been made by the faculty.

- If relevant, students submit human subjects application to Internal Review Board (IRB)
- If appropriate, students begin research, fieldwork, collection of materials, etc.

BCULST 510 Engaging Cultural Studies

- Students schedule first of two meetings with CA to develop/finalize proposal.
- Students meet with PA to discuss progress and plans for Winter Quarter options (i.e. electives and/or directed research).
- Students submit Capstone proposal to CA.
- Students schedule second meeting with CA to discuss plans for Winter Quarter (e.g. the directed research option)
- Students submit pre-approved Capstone proposals to the Grad Office by the end of the quarter. Add codes for Winter Quarter (BCULST 511) are sent to students once proposals are approved.

- Students attend two collaborative writing workshops focused on developing their Portfolio and Capstone.
- Students work independently on Capstone under the guidance of their CA and/or in the context of additional directed research credits.
- Students attend Career Panel together with Year 1 students.
- Students schedule meeting with PA to discuss general progress and plans for Spring Quarter

Week 5 or 6: Attend second portfolio and capstone workshop which includes Career Panel with Year 1 students

Spring Quarter

BCULST 512 Cultural Studies and its Publics
|
- Students work together with 512 faculty instructor on designing, planning and staging the Cultural Studies Conference.
- Students work on (and eventually submit) second Portfolio Framing Essay.
- Students schedule a meeting with PA to review draft of framing essay and to discuss plans for the completion of the Portfolio.
- Students present Capstone work at Cultural Studies Conference.
- Students submit revised Portfolio Essay; PA evaluates and approves the essay.
- Students submit final Capstone project; CA evaluates and approves the project.
- PA evaluates and approves the finalized Portfolio, including the Capstone.
- Following evaluation by PA, students submit finalized Portfolio to Graduate Office.
- Students request graduation on the Grad School web site.
