Course Sequence

Overview

Students register for 10 or more credits per quarter and complete their degree within two years.

Core courses are offered as seminars that meet once or twice a week. These seminars may be include any or all of the following: seminar and small group discussion, on-line collaboration, workshops, case studies, analytical projects, field experiences, service learning and applied research opportunities.

Throughout the program students develop the Cultural Studies portfolio, a collection of student work and related reflective material that displays key learning and charts development over time. The portfolio maps student work to the capstone sequence, elective courses, and community-driven or practice-based work. It may also serve, for many students, as a professional development tool.

Year One

As a Cultural Studies student, you will begin with a pre-fall quarter meeting with members of the program faculty and staff and be assigned an portfolio advisor. This meeting will introduce you to program resources and requirements by helping you to chart a path through the two years, including your choice of electives and consideration of community-based research opportunities. Your portfolio advisor will be help you make those choices. The first-year core courses will orient you to the field of cultural studies, introduce you to our three core research methodologies, and develop among your cohort skills in collaboration. In the spring, you will select a capstone advisor.

Year Two

Before you begin year two, you will have a second pre-fall quarter meeting with your capstone and portfolio advisors. Along with informal mentoring, this meeting will ensure that you have everything you need to complete your capstone project and program portfolio successfully. The second-year courses will launch you, either individually or in project teams, on an arc that leads from project idea and creation to execution and evaluation. In addition to the 40 credits that make up the two-year core curriculum, you will enroll in 20 credits of electives that enhance your capstone project and help you to develop your program portfolio.
