Kenyon S. Chan, Ph.D., is UW Bothell's second chancellor. He began his tenure as Chancellor of the University of Washington Bothell in July 2007.
Chan has announced his intention to leave his role as chancellor effective July 1, 2013. A national search for his successor is under way.
Since his appointment in July 2007, UW Bothell has undergone a profound transformation – doubling the number of students served and tripling the number of degree programs offered – all while becoming the most ethnically diverse four-year campus in Washington state.
Academic programs have blossomed under Chan’s leadership. UW Bothell now offers more than 30 degree programs, with 12 new programs introduced in fall of 2010. Among the many academic centers Chan helped to create at UW Bothell are the renowned Center for Education Data & Research and the new Center for Serious Play.
Prior to his appointment at UW Bothell, Chan was Dean of the College and Vice-President for Academic Affairs at Occidental College. While at Occidental he had the distinction of serving as Interim President for an academic year during a time of institutional transition. Among his many accomplishments as Interim President, Chan raised a record sum of over $21.1 million, worked to strengthen trustee and alumni relations, restructured and renovated the student affairs division and student government, and initiated campus climate and diversity renewal strategies to improve relationships among students, faculty, staff, and administration.
His previous administrative positions include: Dean of Bellarmine College at Loyola Marymount University, Director of the Liberal Studies Program, and Founding Chair of the Asian American Studies Department at California State University, Northridge.
In addition to his vast administrative experience, Chan has over 35 years of academic experience as a faculty member at Occidental College, Loyola Marymount University, California State University, Northridge and the University of California, Los Angeles. With a primary research interest on the effects of race on the emotional development of children and the sociocultural factors that influence motivation, learning, and schooling, his contributions to the academic community have been great, resulting in 26 publications and 32 professional/conference presentations to his credit.
Chan is a three time graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, with a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology (Special Education), an MA in Special Education and a BA in Sociology.

Dr. Chan is a seasoned University administrator, fundraiser and faculty member, who joined the Husky nation after serving at Occidental College, Bellarmine College, and Cal State Northridge. He has a passion for serving in higher education because universities are where adults young and old gather to improve themselves while becoming more productive members of society.
Dr. Chan defines success not strictly in terms of how many students are served, but in terms of the impact the university has on the lives of each one of its students.
