Student Civic Fellows 2010-2011

Sindi Diko

Sindi was born in Albania in a small town called Bilisht. Her parents moved to America in 1996 and were able to bring Sindi and her sister two years later in September 1998 when she was 7. She grew up in Monroe, Washington where she graduated as one of the Valedictorians of Monroe High School.  Currently she is pursuing an undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of Washington Bothell and aiming to get a doctorate in medicine. In the two years that she has been at UW Bothell, she has received an undergraduate merit scholarship twice, was awarded Student of the Month for Feb 2010, and was the recipient of the Sterling and Gene Munro Fellowship for outstanding civic engagement. She was a member of the Campus Events Board and is currently working in Admissions as a tour guide and as a Civic Fellow with the Office of Community-Based Learning and Research.

Gretchen Johnson

I have been involved and very interested in local agriculture with 21 Acres for almost two years now.  I am the coordinator for UW Bothell students that are involved in food/agriculture community-based learning courses.  I collaborate with farm manager at 21 Acres, Rosy, to help design projects for students in classes that have sustainability, urban farming practices as a goal. I have participated in the planning and growing of the crops, and have been through an entire cycle, from soil prep, to seeds, planting and then harvest. In addition I have lead field trips, designed non-chemical (flower-based) insectary gardens for insect control.  Met with the greenhouse manager at UW Seattle and discussed the most effective and educational way to design a medicinal herb garden at 21 Acres that could be used as a tool for teaching and learning.  Have started to reach out to the community to draw up project ideas for my education on growing and eating healthy through urban farming for K-12.  I am very excited because spring is just around the corner and the soil prep is about to begin : )

Maximilian Dixon

Maximilian is senior passionate and dedicated to expanding awareness and action towards sustainablity. He participated in the end of water bottle sales on the UWB Campus, was the president of the sustainability club, Mary Gates Endowment Scholar, Martin Luther King Day of Service site leader, is on the Board of Directors of Friends of the Northcreek Forest and was the Earth Day Coordinator Student Civic Fellow of 2011. He will be continuing his studies in graduate school at the University of Washingotn Seattle and is leaving a wake of enviornmental awareness in his wake.

Andrew Nguyen

Andrew was the Community-Based Research assistant for Shauna Carslile, a ICBLR Faculty Fellow Spring 2011.

Ronnie Thibault

 Ronnie is a fourth quarter student at UWB majoring in the IAS department with an SEB focus and Human Rights minor.  She is 46, work in the field of Developmental Disabilities both in the services and community programs areas. One of her advocacy positions requires she communicate with elementary IEP teams attempting to create educational programs that fit the individual child. She is currently working on research in the area of the Narrative of Developmental Disabilities and how we shape the services offered by representing those with a developmental disability absent of their own histories.  She currently holds a 3.98 GPA.
