Outstanding students, community partners, staff, and faculty all came together on June 8th at Northcreek Events center to celebrate a successful year of community based learning. Fredric Hensen (2011-2012 ASUWB president, and next year’s Earth Day Student Civic Fellow) spoke about his experiences with community-based learning. Eileen Jowell, Northshore Community Schools Coordinator, described in detail the dynamic ways that UW Bothell and Cascadia Community College professors and students have become the backbone of the Community Schools Project in the Northshore School District. Dr. Shauna Carlisle, an Initiative for Community Based Learning Faculty Fellow, talked about community-based learning’s ability to engage students in meaningful research with the King County Housing Authority. Each speaker provided a piece of a greater picture of the complexities, the wealth, and the hard work that community-based learning offers ourselves as individuals and all of us as a nation and as a community. The energy and celebration of partnership was amazing. One student said during the event: “Thank you for the recognition today, I didn’t realize how much had been done, how much I had done, until I heard the speakers today and got to meet community organizers that do so much.” Special thanks to all the wonderful community partners, staff, faculty, and students that were able to come and to Kara Casey Adams for to bringing us all together.
UW Bothell Writing Center is open 7 days a week during the academic year and 5 days a week over the summer.
