The Master of Business Administration (MBA) Program at the University of Washington Bothell is designed specifically for professionals in technology-oriented businesses. Through its innovative curriculum, award-winning faculty, and opportunities for personal achievement, the MBA Program is a valuable asset to the professional development of technology managers, managers from a wide variety of fields, and those who aspire to manage.
The MBA Program was developed in collaboration with representatives from leading regional businesses operating in the software, telecommunications, biotechnology, and high-tech manufacturing sectors. It provides advanced training in the critical management functions, such as Leadership, Marketing, Finance, Accounting, E-commerce, and Operations Management, with an emphasis on the opportunities and challenges faced by high-tech companies.
MBA students learn quantitative techniques and qualitative skills for sound analysis, project management, and strategic decision-making. At the same time, they sharpen their group communication, problem solving, and presentation skills by working closely with other students on assignments and field study projects. The curriculum emphasizes oral and written communication, ethical reasoning, global awareness and working on real-life business problems.
A Math Workshop, BBUS 500 Quantitative Business Methods, is offered to newly admitted students who are encouraged, but not required, to attend. The Math Workshop builds the appropriate quantitative competencies (i.e., principles of algebra, calculus, and statistics) to position the student for success in the MBA program. Instructors will assume knowledge of these principles in their classes. The Math Workshop is a Credit/No Credit class scheduled for July 18 - August 17, MW 5:45 - 7:50pm.
MBA students are admitted as a cohort and take the same classes during Autumn, Winter and Spring Quarters. In the Summer Quarter, students take Enterprise IT Management and may take an elective such as E-Commerce or other available electives. Students may add an elective during the academic year rather than complete one in the summer.
During Autumn through Spring Quarters, classes are usually held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:45 to 10:05 P.M. During Summer Quarter, students may take two classes each lasting for four weeks and usually on MW evenings during the first and/or second parts of the quarter.
An MBA Orientation is scheduled in mid-September with a meal provided. The orientation includes MBA faculty, staff, students and alumni.
Students begin building their new MBA cohort in early September with the three-day Leadership, Team Process, and Decision-Making course (plus one Saturday and two evening classes) which concludes before the Strategic Management in High-Technology Firms and Financial and Managerial Accounting classes start in late September.
During spring of the second year of the MBA Program, students choose either a Consulting or New Venture Creations option. Teams in the Consulting group consult with regional and possibly, global businesses while teams in the New Venture Creations group develop new business plans. Students in the two tracks work in their "Integrated Business Practicum" classes with final presentations to external experts at the end of spring.
