MBA Programs: How to Apply

The MBA Program Office uses a self-managed online application process. As described below, a complete application and all supporting materials must be submitted either online, mailed or transferred electronically on or before the application deadline before the University of Washington Bothell will consider a candidate for admission.

To request a brochure for the Technology and Leadership MBA Programs, e-mail uwbinfo@uwb.edu, or call (425) 352-3277 or 1-800-736-6650.

Application Materials

All applicants to either the Technology MBA-Bothell or Leadership MBA-Bellevue Program must submit the items listed below to be considered for admission. It is to your advantage to request the online letters of recommendation and have the official transcripts mailed to the UW Bothell MBA Program in advance.  This allows plenty of time for them to arrive on or before the application deadlines.

Completed Application Form

All applicants must complete the online application for either the TMBA-Bothell or LMBA-Bellevue Program offered by the University of Washington Bothell. A $50.00 application fee applies.

To apply for the Technology MBA-Bothell Program, select "Business Administration - Technology MBA - Bothell Campus" in the online application.

To apply for the Leadership MBA-Bellevue Program, select "Business Administration - Leadership MBA - Bothell Campus, Bellevue site" in the online application.

If your first MBA Program of choice becomes full and you would like to be considered for the other MBA Program without having to re-apply, you may complete the "Option: Statement for Admissions Consideration in Either the TMBA or LMBA Program" in the application and noted below.

Transcripts

Provide two official transcripts from each post-secondary school you have attended.  Applicants with a UW undergraduate and/or graduate degree do not need to provide official transcripts since we can access them.

Applicants with an international degree submit their official transcript and diploma to the MBA Program office - the official materials are returned after the evaluation is complete.

Official transcripts and international diplomas may be mailed or brought to:

Letters of Recommendation

Provide two letters or recommendation from individuals who know your professional achievements well.

The Letter of Recommendation is available through the online application where you will need to note the name of the Recommenders (2), company, title, phone number and email address. The referral may be sent to your Recommenders before you submit the completed application electronically.  An email goes to each Recommender and asks them to complete the Letter of Recommendation.  Once the Recommender completes and submits it electronically, you are notified by email. You may want to inform the Recommender that the email with the recommendation link is on the way prior to sending it as well as about your timelines for completion.

Application Essays

All applicants must submit two essays online in plain text, or upload Word or PDF in one paginated document. Essays are to address the following topics:

1. Discuss the professional skills you have developed to date. How will you expand upon your abilities during the Technology MBA-Bothell or Leadership MBA-Bellevue Program? What are your short-term and long-term career goals, and how will the MBA degree assist you in achieving them? (maximum 750 words).

2. Write an essay on one of the following topics (maximum 500 words):

  • An organizational change effort
  • A creative solution to an organizational problem
  • A risk taken within an organization

In your essay, describe the problem the organization faced and the program or activity designed to address it. Describe your role in the design and implementation of the program or activity. What was the successful or unsuccessful outcome? Were there any unanticipated events during the implementation? If so, what did you do in response? Please also include your name on each page of your essays.

Optional Essay: Please include any other information that you believe would be helpful to the Admissions Committee in considering your application.

Resume and Work Summary Form

Your resume, submitted online in plain text, or uploaded in Word or PDF, should include the following:

  • All managerial and professional work experience since graduating from high school
  • Any relevant community and/or extracurricular activities
  • Any awards, honors, or other forms of recognition (academic, community, military, etc.) you have received

Please also complete the online Summary of Management and Professional Work Experience (PDF) that includes the following categories, expressed in years and rounded to the nearest half year:

  • Management: Involves supervision of two or more people (e.g., manager, executive leader, team leader, group/project coordinator, etc.)
  • Professional: Requires professional expertise in business functions (sales, accounting, human resources, finance, marketing, operations, etc.) and/or technical functions (engineering, research, logistics, computer programming, sciences, etc)
  • Total Work Experience: Sum of years in management and professional positions after high school

Note: The online Summary of Management and Professional Work Experience PDF is in Acrobat 8.0.  Applicants may use Acrobat 7.0 or 8.0 to save it into the application materials.  Acrobat 7.0 is a free download available through the online application process.

Official GMAT Scores

All applicants must complete the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). Review the GMAT Information section of the Prerequisites page for information about scheduling the test.

Official scores will be sent directly to UW Bothell when you select the UW Bothell MBA Evening Program. The official GMAT scores must come to the MBA Program at the UW Bothell for final admissions to occur.

Your unofficial GMAT scores, provided to you immediately after completing the test, may be included online with your application materials. However, the scores will not include your writing score which comes with your official results in about one week. (Note: If you take the exam near the application deadline, you must provide the unofficial verbal and quantitative scores online plus fax (425-352-5277; attn-UWB MBA Admissions) or scan and email (uwbmba@uwb.edu) as soon as possible to the MBA Program Office for you to have a complete application file and be considered for admissions.)

Scores are effective for five years. If you took the GMAT more than five years ago, you must retake the exam. If you have taken the GMAT more than once, we will consider only your highest score. The University of Washington will keep these scores on file for one year.

Option: Statement for Admissions Consideration in Either the TMBA or LMBA Program

If the MBA Program you apply to becomes full at 40, you may be considered simultaneously for admissions to the other MBA Program without re-applying.  You may use this "Option" in the online application to state the reasons for your interest in the other MBA Program.  If this option is considered by the MBA Admissions Committee, then we will call you to discuss the choice before a decision is made.

International Applicants

Official English Proficiency Scores (TOEFL, MLT or IELTS)

International applicants must also take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the Michigan Language Test (MLT) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

International applicants taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) must submit a photocopy of the score report in their application packet. Official scores will be sent to the University of Washington when you provide Educational Testing Service (ETS) with our school code: 4854.  TOEFL scores usually take about three weeks to transfer to the University of Washington.

The Michigan Language Test (MLT) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) are alternatives to the TOEFL.  Scores may be sent to the MBA Program, University of Washington Bothell.

Review the English Language Proficiency Exam on the Prerequisites page for acceptable scores and scheduling the TOEFL, MLT or IELTS. Scores are valid for two years from the test date.

Official Transcripts - International

International applicants are required to submit only one official transcript and diploma, which is verified and evaluated for a grade point average (GPA) by the University of Washington Graduate School. International applicants who are working in the area usually bring their transcripts to the MBA Program Office, UW1-381.

Additional Information - International

International applicants are required to submit additional information. After submitting your application and paying your fee online, there will be a check list of additional requirements including the University of Washington Statement of Financial Ability form.  Completed materials are sent to the Graduate School except for the original transcript and diploma which are mailed or brought to the MBA Program office.

Application Interview

Interview appointments may be required.  If so, appointments are initiated by the MBA Admissions Committee after an initial screening of applicants within approximately three weeks after the deadline.

Acknowledgement and Decisions

Through the online application process, you will be able to confirm receipt of your MBA application materials online by accessing the Graduate School application process. All required materials must be received before your application will be evaluated. A decision letter will be mailed within six to eight weeks after the closing date by which you are applying.

On occasion, applicants who are admissible may be notified that they have been placed on a waiting list when we have reached our limit of admitted students. If an admitted student does not matriculate, then a space may be made available for someone on the waiting list.
