About Us

The BDC was launched in 2006 with the energy and support of a group of founding partners. While the Center is new, its creation can be traced back many years. Ten years ago, the Business and Economic Development Center (BEDC) at UW Seattle was created. Led by Michael Verchot, it has created and retained 500 jobs in inner city communities and generated more than $15 million in new revenues. Aware of growing needs among Eastside small business owners, and inspired by the work the BEDC, the Bellevue Entrepreneur Center (BEC) was founded in 2002.

Small business owners in the Northshore region began to learn of the work of BEC. UW Bothell faculty and staff - Chancellor Warren Buck, Walter Freytag, and Steven Holland - served on the BEC board, and in November 2004 they convened a focus group from the local business community. Focus group participants pointed to the need for resources similar to those provided through the BEDC and BEC. The Business Development Center at UW Bothell will work to fill the need for professional advice and networking.
