office of institutional research

by Dan Jacoby

How shall you know me? To answer this age-old question, UW Bothell established the Office of Institutional Research (OIR), which began operating in 2009-2010 school year. In cooperation with the offices of Information Technology and Enrollment Management, OIR has been busy creating statistical profiles to help potential students understand the qualities that distinguish UW Bothell as an academic institution, assist the decision-making processes of University administration, and provide information to the state and other constituencies regarding school performance.

OIR is making a difference by helping the community identify needs and effective practices. We're also helping to understand the UW Bothell story and it get it out to the public!

This year, for the first time, UW Bothell also took part in the Noel-Levitz inventory of Student Satisfaction. It should come as no surprise that students continue to rate their experiences at UW Bothell well above the national average, but we will now be able to state this fact authoritatively.

factbook in development

OIR is now getting ready to launch a new electronic factbook in the Fall. The factbook will make access to information on enrollment, degrees, student demographics and employment much easier to find. It will combine materials currently found in Fast Facts, alongside more detailed data that should make it easier for the UW Bothell community to learn about their institution.

reports and requests

OIR has been working with Information Technology and Enrollment Services to develop a number of reporting tools that are available for staff who have specific data needs. The Office has begun outreach to help train users so that they can get the most mileage out of them. Reporting tools vary from simple lists, like one for students eligible to graduate, to more complex tools aimed at validating current practices. If your program or department has a recurring special need, we'll work with the person designated as the reporting services data lead to get timely reports to you.

UW faculty and staff will also be able to request institutional data via email. The OIR team reviews data requests on a weekly basis to determine when, how or if  they can be filled. Priority is assigned for administrative requests that are time sensitive. If a data request cannot be filled, or requires more than 2 weeks, you will be informed after our weekly review.

If you would to make a data request, please email the OIR Reporting Group at datarequests@uwb.edu.
