Bachelor of Arts

Senior Seminar

The Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences faculty is committed to helping students develop their intellectual abilities across the curriculum, especially those required for excellent writing and speaking. The emphasis on writing and speaking across the curriculum, culminating in the senior seminar, represents an added commitment on the part of the faculty and staff to extend and enrich the student's educational experience.

The senior seminar will provide opportunities to develop and demonstrate writing and speaking skills. The student's responsibilities for this aspect of the program include:

  1. Compile a portfolio of graded work.
  2. Enroll in a senior seminar (5 credits) or senior thesis (10 credits over 2 quarters).

Senior Seminar Packets

Senior Seminar Packet (pdf)

All senior seminars begin with a mandatory self-assessment of each student's portfolio in consultation with the instructor. Students in a senior seminar are required to complete a major piece of written work. Students must receive a minimum course grade of 2.5 in the senior seminar to graduate.

Senior Seminar Sign-Up

On April 15th, senior seminar information packets will be placed outside of the IAS Program Office door (UW1-390) and will be posted on the IAS website. If April 15th falls on a weekend, the packets will be made available on the preceding Friday. The packets include all seminars to be offered during the entire upcoming academic year. Instructions for sign-up accompany each packet. All students graduating in the upcoming academic year (summer through spring) should complete this process at this time. Students will not be reminded of this process, so careful attention must be paid to the April 15th date.

Students who have achieved a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher may be eligible to complete a senior thesis (BIS 492) in lieu of a senior seminar. For the thesis option, the student must complete 10 credits over two quarters and produce a 50-page research paper. Students interested in completing a thesis should have a research topic identified and should arrange for a faculty member (with expertise in the topic to be researched) to serve as thesis adviser. Students should notify the advising office of their intention to complete this option at least one quarter before beginning the thesis.

The Capstone consists of 10 credits earned over three quarters (Autumn, Winter and Spring). Students interested in pursuing the capstone should notify the program office before registration begins for the capstone. Interested students should contact Warren Gold and read the following website:
